Several members of AAA superfamily have been described which are necessary for the proliferation of peroxisomes. They all contain two copies of the AAA module, the carboxy proximal copy is well conserved, the amino proximal copy is only poorly conserved. In the phylogenetic tree, two subfamilies (PEX1 and PEX6) can be distinguished, each with a member from S. cerevisiae.
For the new unified nomenclature of peroxisomal biogenesis factors (peroxins), see J. Cell Biol. 135, 1-3 (1996).
